Splash Well Construction

Now that the cockpit sole has been installed and glassed, this is where I will deviate a bit from standard Tolman builds. I have added the splash well base as described by Renn. But the splash well bulkhead has been cut out to provide access to a dinghy, swim ladder, and dog ramp. There is an insert underneath the splash well that boxes in the bilge access and vent hoses and allows the cockpit to drain directly through to the transom. There will be 2 hatches to access the fuel filters and other stored items. These compartments drain into the cockpit at a low spot next to the transom. The wide motor cut out in the transom narrows to the splash well bulkhead where the vent hose will exit. These compartments will be covered with 3/8” decking, (see below)

The splash well bulkhead cut out will have a drop in panel for motoring so a following wave will have to work harder at flooding the cockpit.

Above: A view looking forward and low angle view looking aft. The notches in the splash well bulkhead are where I will merge a bent combing around the cockpit to keep surplus water from running off the decks and into the cockpit.

Below: Patrice took this photo from the kitchen window while I was contemplating the things that boat builders contemplate. The decking has been completed and will provide an extra surface at the transom for sitting, B-B-Q, as well the two aft storage compartments. The next blog entry will show the wrapped combing in the cockpit
